First check which monitor Windows has selected and which refresh rates it actually offers. A high-refresh monitor connected to a PC does not, by itself, prove that the desired mode is active. Confirm resolution and refresh rate together before changing game settings or buying a new cable.

Read the active display mode
In Windows, open Settings, System, Display, Advanced display, then select the monitor you use for gaming. Microsoft places the refresh-rate choice there. Available options depend on the display and supported modes. An asterisk beside an option indicates that selecting it changes the current resolution. Review both values before confirming. See Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions for the current interface.
Make sure you are inspecting the correct screen
With several displays connected, identify the actual gaming screen before adjusting anything. Record its model and the active resolution. A setting shown for the laptop’s internal panel does not describe an external monitor beside it.
If the expected rate is available, select it and confirm that the picture remains usable. Keep the previous mode in your notes. Do not continue testing an unreadable or unstable display merely because a larger number appears in the menu.
If the expected option is missing
Consult the monitor manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model, input, and resolution. Also check the computer’s display-output documentation and any dock or adapter in between. You are checking the complete connection, not just the number printed on the monitor box.
Avoid the blanket advice that every HDMI or DisplayPort connection supports the same modes. Before purchasing a replacement, identify the supported combination you need and the component that currently prevents it, if the documentation establishes one.
Keep refresh rate and rendered frame rate separate
Refresh rate describes how often the display refreshes. A game’s frame counter describes a different part of the experience. Use both observations when investigating motion that feels wrong instead of assuming that one number explains the entire problem.
For a practical check, note the Windows mode and then record the game’s resolution, frame cap, and display mode. Do not alter all three in one pass. You want to learn whether the issue is the selected screen mode or the game’s behavior within it.
Review Dynamic Refresh Rate when relevant
Microsoft notes that Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games and suggests disabling it when that behavior occurs. This is distinct from assuming every variable-refresh display needs the same fix. Check whether the feature is supported and enabled on your device before testing it.
Restart the game if required by the relevant settings and repeat the same observation. Restore the previous preference if the test does not address your symptom.
Document a useful result
A helpful note includes the monitor model, connection route, resolution, offered refresh rates, selected rate, and game used for testing. That makes a support question precise enough for a manufacturer to answer.
“144Hz does not work” omits the conditions that determine whether a mode is supported. A description that includes the dock, adapter, and chosen resolution can save several rounds of guessing.
Will selecting a higher rate increase game FPS?
Do not assume it will. Confirming the display mode solves one part of the setup; the game still needs to render the workload you choose. If the screen mode is correct but gameplay remains choppy, investigate the game’s requirements and performance separately.
