GTA 6 60 FPS: will there be a performance mode on console?

There is no confirmed GTA 6 60 FPS mode. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said the console builds currently run at 30 FPS in development. Asked whether 60 FPS would arrive at launch or later, he said he would need to consult the technical team. He did not rule it out. He did not promise it either.

That distinction matters. Plenty of headlines flattened it into “GTA 6 is locked at 30 FPS”. What Nelson described was a work in progress with no commitment either way. Here is what was said, what the Extended Look shows, and why the PS5 Pro may not be the answer people expect.

What Rockstar actually said

The comments came during a Rockstar North studio visit, not an official announcement. A small group of content creators were invited ahead of the Extended Look premiere. Nelson answered questions in the room.

He said that at this stage of development, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second.

On a GTA 6 60 FPS option, he said the technical team would need to weigh in first. He could not say whether it happens at launch or later.

He also said he did not have details on resolution, ray tracing, or other technical specifics.

Rockstar Games has published nothing official on frame rate. Everything above comes from remarks attributed to Nelson. Outlets including Tom’s Hardware, VGC and Kotaku reported them.

Why “confirmed 30 FPS” overstates it

Read the wording carefully and two things stand out. Nelson used the word currently. He also described the GTA 6 60 FPS question as unresolved rather than closed.

Earlier leaks suggested GTA 6 would ship with both a Quality mode and a Performance mode. Nelson’s answer is more cautious. It is not the flat denial some coverage implies.

The honest position is simple. Thirty FPS is the current target, a GTA 6 60 FPS mode has not been ruled out, and Rockstar has committed to nothing. Anyone answering definitively is filling a gap that still exists.

What the Extended Look tells us

The Extended Look that premiered on August 27 was captured on a base PS5, not a PS5 Pro. Rockstar confirmed that much.

Rockstar also published a 14.2 GB download of the presentation free of streaming compression. Outlets that downloaded and analysed it confirmed the footage runs at 30 frames per second. That lines up exactly with what Nelson described.

Digital Foundry estimated an internal resolution around 1440p, upscaled toward 4K. That is an analyst estimate, not a Rockstar specification. Rockstar has not published resolution targets for any console.

Will the PS5 Pro run GTA 6 at 60 FPS?

No PS5 Pro mode has been announced. No PSSR 2 support, no 40 FPS mode for 120 Hz displays, and no 60 FPS mode.

There is also a technical reason to temper expectations. The PS5 Pro has a stronger GPU and better upscaling than the base PS5. Its CPU is only modestly faster. Digital Foundry cites roughly 7 percent in CPU-limited tests.

That matters because GTA 6 leans hard on world simulation, which is CPU work. If simulation is the bottleneck rather than rendering, extra GPU power alone will not double the frame rate.

The Xbox Series S sits at the other end. It is considerably slower than both the base PS5 and the Series X. That makes it the least likely candidate for any performance mode.

If you are choosing between a PS5 and a PS5 Pro specifically for this game, waiting for concrete numbers is the sensible move.

Rockstar’s track record on frame rate

None of this breaks from pattern. Rockstar has shipped 30 FPS console games for over a decade.

GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 at 30 FPS. It did not gain a 60 FPS mode until the Expanded and Enhanced release, years later.

Red Dead Redemption 2 launched at 30 FPS in 2018. It remains capped at 30 on consoles today, even on PS5 and Series X.

A 30 FPS launch would be entirely consistent with how Rockstar operates. Historically, the higher frame rate arrives in a later patch or on newer hardware.

What 30 FPS actually changes in play

At 60 FPS the image updates roughly every 16.7 milliseconds. At 30 FPS it updates every 33.3 milliseconds.

In practice that affects how immediate driving, aiming and fast camera movement feel. It does not make the game unplayable. It is also the frame rate most players lived with across GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Whether it bothers you depends on what you have been playing. Coming from a 120 Hz shooter, it will be noticeable. Coming from Red Dead Redemption 2, it will feel normal.

Tips while you wait for confirmation

Do not buy a PS5 Pro purely for a GTA 6 60 FPS mode that has not been announced. Wait for Rockstar to publish real performance details per console.

Ignore any spec chart claiming confirmed frame rates by platform. Rockstar has not released those numbers.

Watch for the technical breakdown closer to launch. Frame rate and resolution details usually surface in the final weeks, alongside store page updates.

Sort your storage in the meantime. Our GTA 6 file size guide covers how much space each console has. The GTA 6 map size breakdown explains what that hardware is being asked to render.

Frequently asked questions about GTA 6 60 FPS

Will GTA 6 run at 60 FPS on console?

Not confirmed. Rob Nelson said the game currently runs at 30 FPS in development. A GTA 6 60 FPS option still needs evaluation by the technical team.

Is GTA 6 locked at 30 FPS?

Rockstar has not said that. Thirty FPS is the current development target. A performance mode has been neither confirmed nor ruled out.

Will the PS5 Pro get a GTA 6 performance mode?

Nothing has been announced. The Pro has a stronger GPU but only a modestly faster CPU. Extra graphics power may not be enough on its own.

What frame rate was the Extended Look running at?

Thirty FPS, captured on a base PS5. The downloadable 14.2 GB version confirms it.

Did GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 run at 60 FPS?

GTA 5 only reached 60 FPS with its Expanded and Enhanced re-release. Red Dead Redemption 2 is still capped at 30 FPS on consoles.

Could a 60 FPS mode come after launch?

Possibly. Nelson left open the option of it arriving later rather than at launch. That matches how GTA 5 eventually got there.

Final thoughts

The GTA 6 60 FPS question has no final answer yet, and the most useful thing anyone can tell you is exactly that. Thirty FPS is what the game runs at today. The Extended Look backs that up, and Rockstar has kept the door open without walking through it.

If a performance mode matters to you, expect it after launch or on newer hardware. That is what happened with GTA 5. Confirmed platform details are on the official Grand Theft Auto VI site. We will update this page the moment Rockstar publishes real numbers.
