Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements: full specs and ray tracing tiers

The Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements start with a Core i7-6700 or Ryzen 5 1600, a GTX 1060 6GB, 12 GB of RAM and 70 GB on an SSD. That gets you 1080p at 30 fps on low. For instance, at 1080p and 60 fps on high, CD Projekt Red lists a Core i7-12700 or Ryzen 7 7800X3D with an RTX 2060 Super and 16 GB of RAM.

One thing worth clearing up first. There is no separate spec sheet for Phantom Liberty. In fact, CD Projekt Red replaced the old table with Update 2.0, so the same requirements now cover the base game and the expansion together. Below are all six official tiers, together with the caveats the spec table does not spell out.

VRAM targets are 6 GB, 8 GB and 12 GB respectively. Windows 10 64-bit and DirectX 12 are required across every tier.

Ray tracing requirements

RT OverdriveRT overdrive, 2160p, 60 fpsi9-12900 / Ryzen 9 7900XRTX 408024 GB70 GB NVMe

Similarly, VRAM climbs to 8 GB, 12 GB and 16 GB across those three tiers.

Notably, there is a jump between RT recommended and the non-RT Ultra tier. Both want the same CPU, but ray tracing at 1080p asks for more GPU than ultra settings at 4K without it.

The Overdrive number comes with an asterisk

This is the caveat most spec articles leave out, and it matters.

Specifically, CD Projekt Red measured the RT Overdrive result of 4K at 60 fps with DLSS Frame Generation switched on. Those are therefore not 60 natively rendered frames.

If you turn Frame Generation off, an RTX 4080 will not hold that target. That is because Overdrive uses full path tracing, the heaviest rendering mode in the game by a wide margin.

CD Projekt Red separately recommends Overdrive on RTX 40 Series cards from the 4070 Ti upwards. An RTX 3090 can run it, but only at 1080p and 30 fps. It is set to off by default for good reason.

Storage, NVMe and the end of HDD support

Officially, CD Projekt Red lists 70 GB across every tier. In practice, expect to need closer to 105 GB with Phantom Liberty installed, so clear more than the official figure suggests.

Still, the drive type matters more than the number. Hard drives are no longer supported at all, since the Update 2.0 revision dropped them entirely.

The Ultra, RT recommended and RT Overdrive tiers specifically call for NVMe rather than any SSD. By contrast, a SATA drive works fine for the lower tiers.

Why you still see a GTX 970 listed elsewhere

Search for these specs and you will find pages listing a GTX 970, 8 GB of RAM and an i5-3570K. Admittedly, those are real numbers, but they are old ones.

They come from the Patch 1.63 requirements, which CD Projekt Red replaced back on September 21, 2023. The studio still publishes them on its support page for historical reference, which is how they keep getting recycled into current articles.

There is a second source of confusion. Moreover, CD Projekt Red notes that boxed copies may have outdated specs printed on the packaging. So if you are checking a physical case, ignore it and use the support page instead.

The simple test is the CPU. If a page lists an i5-3570K as the minimum, then it is showing you specs from 2023.

Tips for running Cyberpunk 2077 well

Use DLSS, FSR or XeSS at Quality rather than dropping resolution. After all, CD Projekt Red’s own targets assume upscaling is doing work at the higher tiers.

Treat Overdrive as optional. Ray Tracing Ultra looks excellent, and it costs dramatically less performance than path tracing.

Install on NVMe if you have a slot free. Night City streams a lot of geometry, so the higher presets are specified around it.

Update your graphics drivers before blaming the game. CD Projekt Red flags this first in its own support notes, and it resolves a surprising share of performance complaints.

Finally, our fixes and optimization section covers crashes, stutter and driver issues in more detail.

Frequently asked questions about Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements

What are the minimum Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements?

A Core i7-6700 or Ryzen 5 1600, a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB, 12 GB of RAM, and 70 GB on an SSD, targeting 1080p at 30 fps on low.

Does Phantom Liberty have different requirements?

No. Since Update 2.0, one table covers the base game and the expansion together.

What GPU do I need for ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077?

An RTX 2060 or RX 6800 XT handles RT low at 1080p. Meanwhile, RT Ultra at 60 fps wants an RTX 3080 Ti, and Overdrive is specified around an RTX 4080.

Can I run Cyberpunk 2077 on a hard drive?

No. HDD support was discontinued with the Update 2.0 requirements, and the higher tiers specifically require NVMe.

How much storage does Cyberpunk 2077 need?

CD Projekt Red lists 70 GB. However, allow around 105 GB if you are installing Phantom Liberty alongside it.

Is the 4K 60 fps Overdrive figure native?

No. CD Projekt Red measured it with DLSS Frame Generation enabled.

Final thoughts

The Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements are unusually well documented, with six tiers instead of the usual two. That is genuinely helpful, because the gap between running the game and running it with path tracing is enormous.

For most people, therefore, the recommended tier is the right target, while Ray Tracing Ultra is the sweet spot if your card supports it. Overdrive, meanwhile, is a showcase mode that leans on Frame Generation to hit its own advertised numbers. You can check the current table any time on the official CD Projekt Red support page.
