Fixing the Season 4 crashes, frame drops and connection errors

The Season 4 patch brought two crashes and one stutter problem that affect a lot of players. All three have working fixes that do not involve reinstalling. Here they are, in the order worth trying.

Crash on launch after the update

This one is a corrupted shader cache, not a broken install. The game builds new shaders for the new map and chokes on the leftovers from the previous version.

  • Close the game and its launcher completely.
  • Delete the ShaderCache folder in your game directory — it rebuilds itself.
  • Launch again and wait out the first-run compile, which takes two to three minutes.

Frame drops in the underground area

The new central map’s underground section is genuinely heavier than anything else in the game, and there is no setting that fully solves it yet. What helps most is volumetric lighting: dropping it from High to Medium recovers most of the lost frames with very little visual difference in that area.

Shadow quality is the second biggest cost. If you are still below 60, take shadows to Medium before touching texture quality — textures cost memory, not frame time.

Stuck on “connecting” in ranked

Almost always a region mismatch after the patch reset server preferences. Open the network settings and set your region manually instead of leaving it on automatic — the auto-detect is picking the wrong data centre for a lot of players since the update.

If that does not clear it, the fallback that works is flushing your DNS cache and relaunching. A full reinstall fixes nothing here and costs you an hour.
