PlayStation State of Play recap: biggest game announcements and trailers

The last big State of Play landed on June 2, 2026, packing over 60 minutes of reveals. Highlights included a new God of War game and a fresh look at Marvel’s Wolverine. Since then, Sony followed up with a standalone August 17 broadcast dedicated entirely to Phantom Blade Zero. Here is everything worth knowing from both.

State of Play is Sony’s own showcase format, running since 2019. It is used to reveal games, release dates and PlayStation hardware directly to players. Some episodes cover a wide mix of titles, others zero in on a single game close to launch. The last two both happened, just three months apart.

The June 2 State of Play: the big multi game showcase

This was the broad one, and it delivered a packed lineup across PlayStation Studios and third party partners.

God of War Laufey was the headline reveal. It is a new entry in the series centered on Fey, Kratos’s wife, as the playable lead. No release date was given, but the trailer suggested the game is well into production.

Marvel’s Wolverine got a closer gameplay look, continuing to build anticipation for Insomniac’s take on the character.

Phantom Blade Zero, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Silent Hill Townfall all received updates. Phantom Blade Zero confirmed its October 29 release date and teased a dedicated deep dive show later in the summer.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve got a release date of October 2, 2026. Deluxe Edition owners get Early Access starting September 28.

On the PlayStation Plus side, Runescape: Dragonwilds was confirmed as a day one Game Catalog title. Premium members can expect Gitaroo Man, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams over the following months.

The August 17 State of Play: all Phantom Blade Zero

Unlike the June show, this one skipped the mixed lineup entirely and spent close to 20 minutes solely on Phantom Blade Zero, the wuxia action RPG from S-Game.

The broadcast confirmed over 55 weapons, split between more than 30 main Blades and 25 Phantom Edges, along with a build and reforge system that lets you upgrade gear and pull materials back out to reinvest elsewhere.

Four difficulty modes were detailed: Wayfarer for a story focused run, Pathbreaker as the standard experience, Hellwalker for adaptive enemy AI, and a mode called 66 Days, which combines Hellwalker’s difficulty with a life counter that costs a day for every death.

Martial arts legend Donnie Yen was confirmed for both creative consulting and motion capture, playing Mo Yuan, the father of protagonist Soul. DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback were also shown off during combat sequences.

The one thing missing was a playable demo. Despite an earlier leaked PS Store listing, S-Game did not announce one during the show, so the demo tracker stays on not announced heading into the October 29 release.

Why State of Play formats keep changing

Sony has leaned harder into single game deep dives over the last couple of years, and the shift makes sense once a title gets close to release. A 20 minute show entirely about Phantom Blade Zero lets the developer explain systems in detail that would get a 90 second highlight reel in a mixed showcase.

The tradeoff is that a dedicated show carries more risk if the game does not have much new to reveal. Sony clearly judged that Phantom Blade Zero had enough combat depth to justify the format, and the confirmed weapon count and difficulty modes back that up.

What to expect next

No new State of Play has been officially announced as of this article. Historically, Sony schedules them every couple of months, so a broader multi game showcase sometime in the fall would fit the usual pattern, especially with several 2026 releases still needing marketing pushes before the holidays.

Tips for following State of Play live

Watch on PlayStation’s official YouTube or Twitch channel rather than a mirror stream, since timestamps and chapter markers get added faster on the source broadcast.

Check the PlayStation State of Play page directly for the most accurate air time in your region, since broadcasts scheduled for the evening in the US often land in the early morning hours in the UK and mainland Europe.

No next date has been confirmed yet. The smart move is following the official channels directly rather than waiting on rumors, since Sony uses whatever format actually fits what it has to show.
