The Fortnite new season is Chapter 7 Season 4, called Override. It launched on August 20, 2026 with update v42.00 and runs until October 31. The theme is Gaming Legends, built around video game crossovers, and the Battle Pass headline skin is Sonic the Hedgehog. Three named locations were removed from the map and three new ones took their place.
Override is the last full length season of Chapter 7, and it is the biggest map reshuffle the chapter has seen. The island’s centre was rebuilt around a structure called the Spire, which replaced the Zero Point. Here is everything confirmed, from the Battle Pass lineup to the new hacking mechanic.
Fortnite new season theme: Gaming Legends
The story premise is that Geno steals the Zero Point, and a video game cartridge overrides the island. That turns parts of the map into pockets of Sonic, Pac-Man and Tetris.
Epic’s tagline for the season is Break the Rules, Change the Game. It refers directly to the new mechanic rather than the story.
The crossovers are the largest non-Disney collaboration run Fortnite has had. Sonic brings Sonic, Doctor Eggman, Shadow, Tails and Knuckles. Mega Man, Pac-Man and Tetris also feature.
Every Battle Pass skin in the Override pass
The Override Battle Pass includes eight skins, following the usual format.
| Skin | Type |
| Sonic the Hedgehog | Collab |
| Geno | Story character |
| Phantom | Original |
| Grace Crowne | Original |
| K1TTYW1NS | Original |
| Mali | Original |
| Wrixel | Original |
| Bastian | Original |
There is also a gifting bonus this season. Gift the Override Battle Pass to another player at any point and both of you receive the Peril Peak Mali outfit and accessories.
Battle Royale ranks reset when Override launched, with a new set of ranked rewards to climb through.
Fortnite new season map changes
Three named points of interest were removed: Calamari Canyon, Frosted Flats and Sinister Strip. Ten named locations carried over unchanged.
Three replaced them. Green Hill Zone is the Sonic themed drop, built with loops and terrain designed around speed. Reality’s Reign is an industrial fortress. Stone Sanctum is a shifting temple in the south of the island.
A note on naming, because several guide sites got this wrong. It is Reality’s Reign, not Reality’s Rain. The spelling is confirmed in Epic’s own v42.00 notes.
Beyond the named POIs, a wave of smaller landmarks arrived. Those include Arcade, Pac-Man Island, Blinky Island, Pinky Island, Barncade, Mega Maze, Pixel Polys and Geno’s Machine.
The Spire is the centrepiece. It stands where the Zero Point used to be, with cables running down into the island and energy visibly travelling up it. The sky above reacts to it.
Its position matters for drop planning. All the new locations sit around the Spire, so the middle of the island is far busier than it was last season. Green Hill Zone became the most contested drop almost immediately.
Competitive players lost two significant endgame anchors with Frosted Flats and Sinister Strip. That redraws rotation maths, not just the map art.
The Override mechanic explained
Hacking is the season’s headline feature. Cheat Codes appear across the map, and you activate them using Override Consoles.
The catch is that these codes do not just affect you. They rewrite the rules for every player in the match, which makes capturing a console before anyone else a real objective.
When a player takes control, their name appears around the base of the console. The whole lobby knows who triggered it.
Sprites also return with an entirely new collection and new abilities.
When the Fortnite new season ends and what comes next
Override ends on October 31, 2026, with the changeover landing on November 1 in some regions. Epic lists that date on its official Battle Pass page.
That makes Override a 72 day season, continuing the Chapter 7 pattern of each run getting slightly shorter. The previous three were 110, 78 and 74 days.
The next season is expected to be Chapter 7 Season 5, launching after downtime around November 1. Epic has not confirmed the name, theme or exact date.
Anything you read about the next season right now is datamine only. The next update in the pipeline is v42.10, which is real, but its contents have not been announced.
Why next season leaks are thin right now
Fortnite leaks follow a predictable rhythm, and it is worth knowing before you chase rumours.
Reliable information usually appears one to two weeks before a season launches. That is when Epic pushes teaser files into the game and sends promotional material to streamers, which is exactly how the Override Battle Pass leaked early.
Earlier leaks come from file names and placeholder assets. Those get reshuffled or cut often, which is why themes get walked back. The Chapter 7 Season 2 theme changed direction between leak waves.
Dataminers like SpushFNBR, ShiinaBR, HYPEX and Blortzen have decent track records. Decent is not perfect, and none of them work for Epic.
The practical rule is simple. Treat anything before late October as a rumour, and expect the real reveal on Epic’s own channels.

Final thoughts
Override is a genuinely substantial season, and the Gaming Legends theme delivered more than the usual single collab. Sonic in the Battle Pass, Pac-Man and Tetris on the map, and a mechanic that lets one player change the rules for everyone.
If you are still working through the pass, October 31 is the deadline that matters. For next season, ignore the rumour mill until late October, when Epic starts teasing properly. Official details always land first on the Fortnite news page.
