Baldur’s Gate 3 wizard build: ultimate class and spells guide

The strongest Baldur’s Gate 3 wizard build is Evocation, single classed, with Intelligence pushed to 20 as early as possible. Sculpt Spells is the reason. It lets you drop Fireball directly onto a group of enemies without harming your own party, which changes how you fight from level 2 onwards.

Wizards have the largest spell list in the game and can scribe new spells from any scroll they find. That makes them the most adaptable class in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it also makes them easy to build badly. Here is the setup that works, the spells worth preparing at each stage, and the gear that pushes it over the top.

Why Evocation is the best wizard subclass

Sculpt Spells arrives at level 2 and never stops mattering. Your allies automatically avoid damage from your area spells, so you can throw Fireball into a melee your party is already standing in.

Potent Cantrip follows at level 6. Enemies that succeed on a saving throw against your cantrips still take half damage, which makes your free actions far more reliable.

Empowered Evocation lands at level 10. It adds your Intelligence modifier to the damage rolls of Evocation spells, which is a flat and substantial boost on every Fireball, Magic Missile and Chromatic Orb you cast.

The other schools have their uses. Abjuration is the tankiest option, Conjuration excels at summons, and Divination lets you manipulate dice rolls. None of them match Evocation for raw, repeatable damage.

Stats and setup

Intelligence is your spellcasting stat and your first priority. Push it toward 20 as soon as feats allow.

Constitution comes second. Wizards have poor hit points, and most of your best spells require concentration, so Constitution saves keep them running when you take a hit.

Dexterity third, for initiative and Armour Class. Going first in a fight matters more for a wizard than almost any other class.

Strength, Wisdom and Charisma can all be dumped without much regret unless you are playing the party face.

Best spells for your Baldur’s Gate 3 wizard build

Early game, levels 1 to 4: Mage Armour, Magic Missile, Shield, Grease, Chromatic Orb, Scorching Ray, Misty Step and Flaming Sphere. Grease is genuinely overpowered in the first act and most players underuse it.

Mid game, levels 5 to 8: Fireball, Counterspell, Haste, Ice Storm and Banishment. Fireball is the most consistently useful spell in the game, and Counterspell is close behind for shutting down enemy casters.

Late game, levels 9 to 12: Cone of Cold, Cloudkill, Conjure Elemental, Hold Monster, Fire Shield and Chain Lightning. Conjure Elemental is the standout, because the summon does not require concentration and absorbs an enormous amount of enemy attention.

The level cap is 12, so level 6 spells are the ceiling. Plan your final few levels around what you actually want prepared rather than collecting everything.

Feats worth taking

Ability Improvement to reach Intelligence 20 should be your first pick, every time.

Spell Sniper reduces the roll you need for a critical hit with spell attacks by 1. It also grants a cantrip.

War Caster gives you advantage on concentration saves, which protects Haste and your control spells.

Alert adds a large initiative bonus. Acting before the enemy is how a squishy caster survives.

Best gear for a wizard

Markoheshkir is the best staff in the game for this build. It is hidden in the basement of Ramazith’s Tower, reachable through the Below portal after you confront Lorroakan.

The Robe of the Weave sits in a secret area deeper in the same tower. The Potent Robe is a strong alternative earlier on.

Beyond those, prioritise anything that raises spell save DC or spell attack rolls. Your damage scales, but enemies failing their saves is what makes the damage land.

Why the wizard meta is stable now

This is the part that separates Baldur’s Gate 3 from live service games, and it is genuinely useful to know.

Patch 8 arrived on April 15, 2025 and Larian explicitly called it the final major patch. It added twelve new subclasses, one per class, including Bladesinger for wizards, plus the Booming Blade cantrip.

Since then the game has only received hotfixes, with Hotfix 36 the most recent. Larian has moved on to other projects and confirmed it is not returning to Faerûn.

The practical effect is that build guides for Baldur’s Gate 3 do not go stale. Nothing has been rebalanced in over a year and nothing is scheduled to be. A guide written today will still be accurate next year, which is not something you can say about most games we cover.

Multiclass options worth considering

Staying single classed gives you the most spell slots and the highest level spells. For pure casting power, that is the correct answer.

If you want more, Fighter 2 with Wizard 10 grants Action Surge, letting you cast twice in a turn. Evocation Wizard 10 with Tempest Cleric 2 is the classic Gale setup, built around lightning and cold. Wizard 8 with Sorcerer 4 trades some spell level for metamagic and dice manipulation.

Tips for playing a wizard well

Scribe every scroll you find. It costs gold and a long rest, and it is the single biggest advantage the class has over Sorcerers.

Swap prepared spells before fights, not during. You can change your entire loadout outside combat for free, so tailor it to what you know is coming.

Do not neglect Grease and Web. Control wins more encounters than damage in the first two acts.

Cast Mage Armour after every long rest. It lasts all day and most players forget.

Frequently asked questions about Baldur’s Gate 3 wizard build

What is the best wizard subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Evocation, because Sculpt Spells lets you cast area damage spells without harming allies, and Empowered Evocation adds your Intelligence modifier to Evocation damage.

Should I multiclass my wizard?

For maximum casting power, no. Fighter 2 with Wizard 10 is the strongest multiclass option if you want Action Surge.

What is the best spell for a Baldur’s Gate 3 wizard build?

Fireball is the most consistently useful. Counterspell is arguably as important for shutting down enemy spellcasters.

What stats should a wizard prioritise?

Intelligence first, then Constitution for concentration saves, then Dexterity for initiative and Armour Class.

Where do I find Markoheshkir?

In the basement of Ramazith’s Tower, through the Below portal that appears after you confront Lorroakan.

Will this build change with future patches?

No. Patch 8 was the final major update, and Larian has confirmed it is not returning to the game.

Final thoughts

A Baldur’s Gate 3 wizard build does not need to be complicated to be devastating. Take Evocation, get Intelligence to 20, prepare Fireball and Counterspell, and find Markoheshkir before the final act.

What makes the class worth the effort is flexibility. No other class can rewrite its entire spell loadout between fights, and none can absorb new spells straight from scrolls. Play to that instead of chasing one perfect setup. Patch details are on the official Baldur’s Gate 3 site.
